The Department of Bengali has been an integral part of the college since its inception in 1961. It has finished its 63-year journey despite many ups and downs. Both the required and general courses had been offered by the department. Bengali was taught as a first language in Higher Secondary (+2) courses offered by the institution from 1976 until 2003, when it was connected with the W.B. H.S. Council.
The Bengali Honors course was first offered by the institution in 2001. The department provided 2+1 Honours and General courses, according Calcutta University's Graduation Programme. The department adopted the 1+1+1 examination method that Calcutta University used in 2006. In 2018, CU implemented the three-year semester system (CBCS) for its BA, BSc, and BCom programs. As of right now, according to NEP 2020, new 4 years graduation system will be introduced from the academic session 2023-24.
